Chapelle de Picpus

Église Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix de Picpus

Congrégation des Sacrés-Cœurs de Jésus et Marie (Picpusiens)

Sanctuaire Notre-Dame-de-Paix et Saint-Michel

33, rue de Picpus, 75012 Paris
C1 The organ was built by the CavailléColl workshops in 1882. The console is marked with the firm’s plaque no. 11. The instrument was delivered on 27 May 1882. At an undetermined date, Gutschenritter (?) installed an additional windchest at the side, at the rear of the Récit division, to accommodate a Nasard stop.
This chapel is the place of worship linked to Picpus Cemetery, where General La Fayette and his wife are buried, along with the remains of 1,306 people of all social backgrounds who were guillotined during the Great Terror of 1794. It was built to preserve the memory of these victims, but also to welcome the very young congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (the Picpus Fathers and Sisters), who settled in Picpus in 1806. It is owned by the Foundation of the Oratory and Picpus Cemetery. The chapel was built on the site of the chapter room of the Canonesses of St. Augustine, who occupied the premises before the French Revolution. The chapel was blessed on 22 April 1841 under the patronage of the Archangel Saint Michael. It is commonly called the Chapel of Our Lady of Peace because of a small statue of the Virgin Mary, Our Lady of Peace, displayed in its north transept. Since 2019, the chapel has been leased by the Archdiocese of Paris to serve as the worship space for Maison Saint Augustin, the propaedeutic year of the Paris seminary, and the Jean-Marie Lustiger student residence, both located in part of the Sisters of Picpus’ buildings. A student chaplaincy, CEP Nation, has also opened on site in preparation for the opening of the Sorbonne Nouvelle’s Campus Nation in 2022. The sisters of the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary still continue to come here to pray. Source
